We don’t run out of energy, we create our own energy

I wasted many years of my life saying I was ‘tired’. Unable to find the energy I needed to do the stuff I wanted to do, exercise, grow areas of the business, socialise! I slept well, I ate well, I exercised, what else could I do? The truth is, it wasn’t any of those external factors. Sure, they help, but physical tiredness is not the same as energy.

Most people think energy comes from food. Of course we get chemical energy from food but it won’t give you emotional energy. Digesting food actually uses up energy, hence why we often feel sleepy after a big meal. Sugary foods can spike superficial energy but then your energy will drop lower than your initial start point, setting you back and negatively impacting your dental health and insulin levels.

Another misconception is that energy comes from sleep. Again we do need a basic amount of sleep for cellular energy. But how many times have you thought you needed a good sleep, had a lie in and then felt more tired than when you wake up early? Sleeping lowers our frequency which lowers our emotional energy.

A really common go to when we are low energy is coffee - coffee has a life span so when we have a coffee in the morning it continues to release caffine throughout the day, including before we go to bed. This disrupts our sleep, and so we wake up feeling tired and so buy another coffee… there’s a reason coffee is the second most traded commodity to fuel.

Energy is not something we run out of. It’s something that gets blocked in the body, physically or emotionally. We can unblock energy through movement and passion.

Yoga gives you energy because of the nurturing nature of the practice (different to other punishing forms of exercise), and a good yoga sequence is designed to work with and unblock your chakra system, which is your energetic system. Energy lives in your spine, so backbends, twists and folds (every yoga pose) help us ignite our energy.

Energy also comes from passion! Again, that comes from within. If you find what you are passionate about, suddenly you don’t need food or sleep, you can keep going for days on nothing! So getting clear on what we really want, goals which speak to your heart is essential.

We are not usually tired. We are tired of something.
